He committed suicide on this day (January 6th) in 2009. He was 34, and it was the day after my 21st birthday. Because I was studying abroad and having a visa crisis at the time, I did not return to the USA to attend his funeral although I wanted to. My mom went with my younger brother. She said there was a young man named Peter at the funeral. He looked close to James's age. The grown siblings recognized him as a "college friend" that James had lost touch with after graduating. They tolerated his presence, but had no wish to speak to him directly. My mom said the only way to describe the look on this mourning young man's face was that it was like seeing a widow in her veil. We never knew for sure, because obviously James isn't here to tell us, but he was probably closeted. Being from a socially conservative Bolivian Catholic family in North Dakota, there was an irreconcilable difference between two vital parts of his identity. And he died on Epiphany. It's all weirdly self-referential.

Anyway, that experience was what informed the composition of my thesis, which also approached the question of divine transcendence in the face of human tragedy and frailty. Where words fail, music speaks.

(It's also probably the reason why if I meet a hot guy and find out that he is a dentist, he always automatically becomes 20 points hotter.)Natural versus Supernaturalhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13360250952203019039noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3491847300687140418.post-46436999666311539702019-01-06T20:15:48.018-08:002019-01-06T20:15:48.018-08:00Kyle, this is so beautiful.
